Mission Canyon Planning Area

Mission Canyon is an unincorporated portion of Southern Santa Barbara County and is under the jurisdiction of County government. The 1984 Specific Plan was prepared jointly with the City of Santa Barbara as a growth management tool and is one of the several components which make up the planning process in many jurisdictions, including the County of Santa Barbara.

The planning area for the Mission Canyon Area Community Plan is approximately 1,140 acres located in the lower foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains, immediately northerly of and contiguous to the City of Santa Barbara. The land uses are almost exclusively that of single family residential with the exception of the Santa Barbara Woman's Club, Rocky Nook County Park, and the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden.

In collaboration with the community and the Mission Canyon Planning Advisory Committee (MCPAC), an update to the 1984 Mission Canyon Specific Plan was initiated in Fall 2006. The updated Specific Plan has been modified to a Mission Canyon Community Plan to be adopted as part of the County's Land Use Element. The project also includes the development of Residential Design Guidelines. The purpose of the guidelines are:

* To provide reasonable, practical, and objective guidance to assist residents, home-owners, and designers in identifying the key design characteristics and components that define the character of a neighborhood in designing new or remodeled homes;

* To guide, educate and motivate owners, developers and designers to create projects that contribute to community design objectives to enhance the livability of Mission Canyon; and

* To provide the tools needed for staff, the County's Board of Architectural Review, other decision makers, and community members to properly evaluate development proposals within the context of these guidelines.
