Public Works wins award for debris flow photography

Santa Barbara County Public Works was presented with the California Association of Public Information Officials (CAPIO) EPIC Award for distinction in photography. The submission compiled photographs from the aftermath of the Thomas Fire and 1/9 Debris Flow. The photographs were praised for their ability to provide visual context over time, clean style, and for not letting drone technology get in the way of the storytelling. One reviewer said, "Working in a disaster zone is an emotionally draining experience. Having to do so for an extended amount of time simply drains so much from a crew. You did an outstanding job of documenting a horrible event. Congratulations to your team for their collective efforts." While Water Resources did not receive an award in the Community Relations and Participation category for the WaterWise High School Video Awards, judges said the "campaign materials were excellent" and they "loved that the winning videos are shown at local movie theatres." CAPIO received 210 submissions in various categories. The department received the award on April 10, 2019 at the CAPIO annual conference.
