The Cuyama Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA) met for the first time on June 30 at 10 a.m. The GSA is tasked with preparing a Groundwater Sustainability Plan by March 2020 to sustainably manage groundwater in the basin for the first time in its history. The GSA formation was a long process that required a year of intense negotiations between four counties, the Cuyama Community Services District (which serves the town of New Cuyama), and the Cuyama Basin Water District (which represents agricultural landowners). The Cuyama GSA was formed in accordance with the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act to manage groundwater in the Cuyama Basin, which has been designated as "critically overdrafted" by the California Department of Water Resources.
