RR&WM Collection Service Title bar

There are three different types of collection systems for households in the unincorporated areas of the County: one for the South Coast (from the Ventura County-line to the Gaviota Pass), one for the Lompoc unincorporated area (from the Gaviota Pass north to the crest of Drum Canyon and Harris Grade roads), and one for the Santa Ynez and Santa Maria Valley unincorporated areas.

The following rates pertain to the five zones in the unincorporated areas of Santa Barbara County that are serviced by two franchise waste haulers and are effective from July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015.

* When cans are located over 100 feet from the travelled roadway, this charge for residential walk-in or drive-in service may be levied for each 100-foot multiple over 100 feet.  The fee shall be reduced by half if service is for trash or organics only.  For drive-in service, the charge to reach the nearest customer, which reduces the distance to the furthest customers, shall be divided equally among each customer. A travelled roadway is defined as a private road, service road, or driveway on which six or more customers are located.

**  Fee is per month for each 1,000 feet of extra distance travelled going in and out for collection.

Under each level of service, the residents determine the number of containers that will be used for organics (yard material, grass, leaves, etc.)  and trash collection. For example, if a resident chooses the Standard Service level (three containers in addition to a recyclables container), the resident determines how many of those three containers will be used for organics and /or trash collection. Typically a household will use at least one container for organics.  Both the organics and trash are collected once per week from a customer’s backyard.

Many mail and packaging stores accept packing peanuts to be reused or recycled. Contact a local store to verify that clean packing peanuts will be accepted.

Customers with residential recycling service in the unincorporated areas of the County may also have household batteries collected curbside for recycling. The household batteries should be placed in a clear plastic bag and placed on top of the household's blue recycling container on collection day.  To prevent rechargeable batteries from catching fire, tape the positive ends with clear tape.  Customers in apartments, condominiums with centralized trash and recycling service should consult with their property manager to determine the nearest household battery collection location.

In addition, single-family households in the unincorporated areas of the County may contact their local waste hauler to request a postage-paid container for the collection of sharps (needles).  The household may then mail the package to the pre-addressed location, where the sharps will be processed for recycling.  Finally, single-family households in the unincorporated areas of the County may make two requests per calendar year to have bulky items, including electronic waste, picked up by their waste hauler.

Electronics may also be taken to a facility that collects such items for recycling or dropped off during one-day collection events held periodically throughout the County. For a list of facilities that accept electronics, please click here:
